German Universities operates on low Tuition fees like 500 euros/semester though fees may be higher in private universities. Most of the courses taught in the universities in Germany are in the German language. As an international student, you may begin to worry about this.

It is nice to let you know that there are increasing numbers of English courses taught also even in the cheap tuition universities in Germany. There are about 70 Universities and about 10% of them are in top 200 when it comes to international rankings (worldwide ranking). Note these words commonly used in Germany:

  • Universitat: This is a doctorate-granting institution.
  • Fachhochschule: This is any institution with emphasis on professional and practical training.
  • TestAS: This is an aptitude test for foreign students from non-EU countries who want to do undergraduate studies at a German university. It does not require any special knowledge. It tests abilities important for a successful course of studies. This test can be taken in many countries. You can take TestAS twice a year. It is offered in German and English languages.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Germany is cheap and affordable. You need to know that education is not completely free in Germany as students will need to budget for their own living expenses. It is estimated at 600euros which covers the cost of accommodation, food, travels, books, stationeries, health care, registration fees etc.

So, in one year the estimated cost of living is put at 8000 euro. This is an estimate amount; it could be more or less. It depends on the individual involved since different people have different lifestyles.

Also, you must obtain a visa. But before it is granted, you will need to show proof that you can afford to take care of yourself while studying in Germany.

Two ways of doing this are:

  • Open a German blocked account to the tune of 8000euro
  • Present a sponsor’s letter obtained from a friend or relative in Germany who’s willing to take care of your living expenses in Germany.

Undergraduate entry requirements/First cycle studies (Bachelors)

If you are planning to study in Germany at the undergraduate level, below are the general admission requirements for international students.

You will need to visit your university of choice’s website for other requirements that are not stated here. Note that you must already be qualified for higher education studies in your home country before thinking of studying in Germany as an international student.

If you want to study at a German university, you will have to show a “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” – or “university entrance qualification”. This university entrance qualification is basically a school-leaving certificate/result. 

This result will qualify you for university study. If your secondary-school certificate is not up to standard for study in Germany, you will have to attend a foundation course (“Studienkolleg”) before you are allowed to enrol.

Undergraduate entry requirements

  • A valid school leaving certificate
  • English/German proficiency results
  • You must pass any additional entry tests (especially for competitive courses)

Postgraduate entry requirements/Second cycle studies (Masters)

As an international student applying for a master’s program at an institution in Germany, you must be in possession of

  • A relevant bachelor’s or equivalent degree diploma
  • English/German proficiency results
  • Certificate and transcript of your undergraduate studies
  • You must pass any additional entry tests (especially for competitive courses)
  • For business schools and MBA programs students may require a particular score from recognized tests, like GMAT or GRE.

Doctorate entry requirements/Third cycle studies (PhD)

For PhD studies, you will need to be in possession of the below document

  • A relevant diploma or master’s degree program.

Language requirements for Admission to the Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD levels at the Universities in Germany


For German language proficiency results, any of the results received at one of the following examinations is accepted:

  • German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Applicants (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber– DSH). You can take it at your university in Germany.
  • Test of German as a Foreign Language for foreign applicants – Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerber– TestDaF.
  • You can also take the German language examination as part of the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test) at a Studienkolleg.


Additionally, you may also be requested to take a course in English if you don’t have the necessary level of command to successfully complete the selected study program. You should therefore check with your host university if your current level of English is sufficient.

Akademische Prüfstelle (APS)

Student from China must have their certificates pre-checked by the academic verification office of the German embassy in Beijing (Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) der Deutschen Botschaft in Beijing) before you can apply for higher education in Germany. This process simplifies the application at German universities and accelerates the issuing of a VISA.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for German universities are cheap and affordable especially when compared to countries like UK, Australia or USA. The tuition fees vary from program to program and are estimated at 500 Euro per semester. This is not the case with private universities as their tuition fees are higher. We still advice you to check this out with your desired institution.

  1. Technical University of Munich:

This is one of the best engineering colleges in the country and boasts not only of an amazing and helpful faculty but world class research centres as well.

The university has research centres for cancer, food and nutrition and catalyst research. Engineering students have countless options to choose from such as aerospace, medicine, and nuclear energy and so on.

An applicant, trying to get into the college, is expected to open an account and fill in the key details, send along his academic transcripts and if the course is taught in German or French, he will have to show evidence that proves he is fluent in these two languages.

It won’t be necessary if the course is taught in English. However, he will then have to appear for IELTS or TOEFL in which he has to score a 6.5 and 88 respectively.

The winter semester applications start in April and that for the summer semester begins in November.
